What started out as a seemingly close contest for RNC Chairman turned into a cake-walk for the eventual winner. Senators Maricella Oterez (R-CA) and Phil Strunk (R-PA) had both been nominated for the leadership position. However, in the midst of voting, Senator Strunk dropped out of the race as he announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for the upcoming presidential elections. At the time of his announcement, Senator Strunk was trailing by only a small margin of votes.
Senator Oterez becomes the first woman to lead the GOP in it’s 154 year history. She’s also the first member of the Latino community to head either major party in the Unites States. The timing of Oterez’ ascension appears to have come at a good time for the party as it has been seen to become, in some circles at least, a party catering to white, middle and upper income males as well as business interests of the current administration.
In a widely publicized speech to party members, Senator Oterez defended the conservative roots of the Republican Party and added that, as chairwoman, she planned on breaking new ground for the GOP. Exactly what that means we’ll have to wait and see, but there is wide speculation that attempts will be made to bring more minorities and women voters into the Republican fold.
“You know, President Bush did a great job of uniting most of the country, but I think that we could probably do better,” said Senator Danegger of South Dakota. “I don’t see why we couldn’t do better in areas like the Califorina or New England. I’m very optimistic that Chairwoman Oterez can break that new ground for us.”
In other news, Kentucky Senator Sam Watkins has been elected as the Republican leader in the Senate. A long-time member of the Senate, Watkins brings loads of experience integrity and solid conservative values to the leadership position. We here at FOX News could not have hand picked better candidates and applaud and wish both Oterez and Watkins the best in their new positions.
