Running in an election takes commitment and activity. If you can't put it forward, don't get involved. By the end you will be writing multiple speeches and many events each day if you want to win. This will ensure that the most active players become President.
Time
Every month consists of 3 days. Any primaries in these months are held at the end of the third day.
(To get the game started quickly, our months will consist of 2 days until November 2008)
Fundraising
Every candidate starts with $2,000,000. This is really very little money for a Presidential campaign, but its about what an average candidate would have made by December. You are going to need more to run a campaign past Iowa and New Hampshire.
To do this, you will need to hold Fundraiser events (In the Fundraiser forum), and apply for endorsements from the variety of Special Interest Groups.
Other players who aren't running also have $2,000,000 in their warchests, (consider it leftover money from their Senate Campaigns), and they can donate money to help your campaign (maybe for favors later if you want to be dirty like that).
Spending Money -- Advertising
Money can be spent in a variety of ways. To use the money in a state, for example on a television advertisement, you would write at the top of a post in a primary campaign Television Ad -- $350,000, and then basically write out the advertisement. A statewide newspaper would be something that everyone in the state can read (The Des Moines Times). A local newspaper is a local town or regions paper, and you must write where you are running it in the header.
Below is a list of costs:
Television Ad: $350,000
Radio Ad: $50,000
New York Times Ad: $150,000
Washington Post Ad: $100,000
Statewide Newspaper Ads: $10,000
Local Newspaper Ads: $1,000
Spending Money -- Staff
You can also spend your money to hire campaign staff in a state. You start with 25 staff members in every January primary state. You can hire up to 10 additional staff with cash in each state, and more could join if you are winning successfully.
YOU DON'T START OUT WITH ANY STAFF IN LATER STATES. BUT YOU CAN TRANSFER UP TO 10 STAFF MEMBERS FROM EVERY EARLY STATE TO LATER STATES.
You can also buy up to 10 staff members in each state per month.
Below is a list of costs;
1 Staff Member: $2,000
2 Staff Members: $1,000
5 Staff Members: $10,000
10 Staff Members: $20,000
You post orders for additional staff as a campaign announcement in the primary campaign, with a quick statement, and a heading of
Hiring (#) Staff -- ($$$ Cost)
Fill in the (#) with the number of staff and the ($$$ Cost) with the price... obviously.
Campaigning
Most of your time will be spent campaigning; Holding events and making speeches in the proper states. These will improve your standing in the state and are the central path to victory. No event should be shorter than a long paragraph, and long and detailed is better. A great full length speech may even win you some national news attention.
Election Night
Will occur sometime After 2pm on the 3rd (2nd until 11/08) day of the primary's month. I cannot promise a specific time, so you shouldn't plan on having alot left to do by then.
Debates
We won't simulate primary debates (It would be too much work), but in the General election 1-3 debates will be held between the candidates. If an independent candidate is polling at over 10%, they may be invited to attend.
Governor Campaigns
A governor campaign is similar to a Presidential campaign, except that there are no primaries (parties must agree on who is running where), and each campaign has 25 staff total to start with. You can still add an additional 10 staff through hirings, and more can join if you are succeeding.
